Emotional support animals (ESAs) are companion pets prescribed by mental health professionals to provide therapeutic benefits for those managing psychiatric disabilities. ESAs have protected access to housing under federal Fair Housing Act laws that require reasonable accommodations. But ESAs can legally be refused entry to public spaces like restaurants, stores, and hotels, unlike trained service dogs. Preventing misuse of ESA designation while supporting those who benefit from ESAs remains an ongoing balancing act. When legitimately prescribed, ESAs provide invaluable comfort and emotional support.
