Police K9s and military working dogs provide invaluable support through their tracking, detection, and apprehension abilities, but lack legal protections given to human officers and service dogs. Legally considered property, working dogs can be denied public access when off-duty and carry minimal penalties for harm against them compared to human cops or soldiers and service animals. Once retired, adoption presents challenges in acclimating former working dogs to domestic life. Advocates continue pushing for greater recognition and legal protections for working dogs beyond their status as equipment.
